Happy Colors Family Room

Recently I helped a friend freshen up her family room and kitchen.

Here is a before pic of the family room….
This is an unfair before picture. It’s taken with a phone in bad light. The walls were a soft yellow and the furniture, which is in great condition, stayed the same. We picked out new carpet, wall paint, and added new wall trim and molding. Then we rearranged the furniture.
The walls are painted Chestertown Buff by Ben Moore and the trim is just white. The carpet color is Adirondack from Lowe’s (can’t remember the brand) it is so soft!
We added white paint and trim above the mantel to match the foyer shadow box wainscoting. It really makes the fireplace a bright and beautiful focal point.
In the picture prior to the above photo you can see the TV console was to the right of the fireplace taking up the big main wall.
We moved the TV console to the opposite wall because it is a little smaller and isn’t as visual as the previous space. TV’s are not a great decorative focal point but…
these two handsome dudes are!  We gave them center stage to set the right mood as you walk into this “family” room from the foyer.

For one – you know who’s BOSS and for two – what better art than the two princes of the house. I made the 30 x 30 inch frames with pine wood.  Then put white foam board inside for the background. Then we printed out 20 inch square photos mounted on white foam board and stuck them to the white board with double stick velcro.
New lamp shades, a new throw pillow and items that the owner already had made this beautiful space fresh, colorful and crisp.
Lamp shade from Target.
Decorative pillow from Homegoods.
The mantel decor was left simple with vintage books from a grandmother, a lantern that was just the perfect color and a sweet black and white picture of the kids..
The white trim on top of this mantel brought in a classy and bright vibe to the room.
The above photo shows the stacked baseboard molding. We left the original 3 inch baseboard trim in place and purchased a pkg. of basic builder trim for around $30 and stacked it upside down on top of the original baseboards. Caulk and paint it together and it looks thick, modern and more noticeable.
That was the original carpet above… woven Berber that stained easily and wasn’t all that comfortable.
(I know because we have the same thing)
In this sweet picture with the owner and her cute mom, you can see the new carpet is a lot darker and more of a cut Berber that is soft and stain resistant.
The cutest and sweetest red heads you’ve ever seen!
She – on your left might look familiar if you are local to where I live….check THIS page for details.
Our inspiration? This kitchen valance fabric that is only one year old. The owner loves it so we chose that as our inspiration for the rest of the main floor decor.
To blend the kitchen and family room we added a chalk board with a dark wood stained frame to the pantry door. The black and wood added contrast and improved the view from the family room into the kitchen.  I made a growth chart for the kids to track their height. They grow so dang fast…
The owners invested in long term decor features for their family room update – trim, carpet and paint. We didn’t spend much on accessorizing but used what the owners already had.
Happy colors, comfortable flooring and furniture make this family room extra livable and very classy.
I enjoyed doing this project….awesome family!
Thanks for stopping by and thank you to the sweet owners for letting me share their new space..
Have a great week!

That looks fantastic! The colors are warm and wonderful. Love that you freshened up what she already had. That's how we all have to do it and it makes sense to use the things you have and love.
